Firewise is a national organization dedicated to allowing “individuals to take responsibility for preparing their homes for the risk of wildfire.” Why is that important?
Scientific research has proven that when adequately prepared, a house can withstand a wildland fire without the intervention of fire suppression services. And when firefighters do make a stand to save a home, Firewise Communities provide a safer working environment to help make a nearly impossible job possible.
Not only do you benefit if your home is adequately prepared, but you also benefit if your neighbors have prepared their homes as well. The greater the area of preparedness, the less the intensity of the fire. The research cited above has also shown that if your home is prepared to a distance of at least 100’ (better 150’) there is a good chance that a crown fire will drop to the ground if there is little ground fuel to support it! And if there are fire suppression services available (a fire truck for example), they will be more likely to risk themselves to save your home if you have done your part. And, as an important collateral benefit, your insurance company will be less likely to cancel your insurance; some even offer a discount if you live in a certified, Firewise community.
